The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day, at 5:15 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable W. David Angus, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Banks, Brown, Dickson, Frum, Lang, McCoy, Mitchell, Neufeld, Peterson and Seidman (11).

In attendance: Marc LeBlanc and Sam Banks, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Tracie LeBlanc, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), it was agreed that the committee commence in camera for the consideration of future business.

It was agreed that senators' staff be authorized to remain in the room.

At 5:35 p.m., the committee resumed in public.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, the committee began its examination of the Order Amending Schedule 2 to the Canada National Marine Conservation Areas Act, together with the Report to Parliament entitled "Gwaii Haanas National Marine Conservation Area Reserve and Haida Heritage Site," tabled in the Senate on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, pursuant to the Canada National Marine Conservation Areas Act, S.C. 2002, c. 18, sbs. 7(1).

The chair made a statement.

After debate, it was agreed that the committee does not disapprove the order and that the chair table a report indicating such at a future sitting of the Senate.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 5:40 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:54 p.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 11, 2010, the committee resumed and continued its examination of the current state and future of Canada's energy sector (including alternative energy). (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

The chair made an opening statement.

Minister Paradis made a statement and, together with Mr. Corey, Mr. Landry and Mr. Shanks, answered questions.

At 8:17 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
