The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day, at 5:06 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Grant Mitchell, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Banks, Brown, Dickson, Lang, Massicotte, McCoy, Mitchell, Neufeld, Peterson and Seidman (10).

In attendance: Marc LeBlanc and Sam Banks, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 11, 2010, the committee continued its examination of the current state and future of Canada's energy sector (including alternative energy). (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission:

Michael Binder, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer;

Patsy Thompson, Director General, Directorate of Environmental and Radiation Protection and Assessment.

The deputy chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Binder made a statement and, together with Mr. Jammal and Ms. Thompson, answered questions.

At 6:31 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
