The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day at 4:18 p.m., in room 160- S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, De Bané, P.C., Downe, Fortin- Duplessis, Johnson, Mahovlich, Patterson, Raine, Segal, Smith, P.C., and Wallin (11).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Robichaud, P.C. (1).

In attendance: Natalie Mychajlyszyn, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 4, 2010, the committee began its examination on the political and economic developments in Brazil and the implications for Canadian policy and interests in the region, and other related matters.

WITNESSES:

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada:

Jon Allen, Assistant Deputy Minister, Americas;

Neil Reeder, Director General, Latin America and the Caribbean;

David Plunkett, Chief Trade Negotiator Bilateral and Regional.

Mr. Allen made a statement and, together with Mr. Plunkett and Mr. Reeder, answered questions.

At 5:56 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Downe, Fortin- Duplessis, Johnson, Mahovlich, Raine, Smith, P.C., and Wallin (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Robichaud, P.C. (1).

In attendance: Natalie Mychajlyszyn, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 4, 2010, the committee continued its examination on the political and economic developments in Brazil and the implications for Canadian policy and interests in the region, and other related matters.

WITNESS:

As an individual:

Paul Alexander Haslam, Associate Professor, School of International Development and Global Studies, University of Ottawa.

Mr. Haslam made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:50 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
