[English]

Adam Thompson, Clerk of the Committee: Honourable senators, as clerk of your committee, it is my duty to advise you of a vacancy in the position of chair and to preside over the election of a new chair of the committee. I am now prepared to receive nominations to that effect.

Senator Jaffer: I nominate Senator Nancy Ruth.

Mr. Thompson: Thank you, senator.

Are there any other nominations? A seconder is not required. If there are no other nominations, then I will put the question formally.

It is moved by the Honourable Senator Jaffer that the Honourable Senator Nancy Ruth do take the chair of this committee. Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

Mr. Thompson: I declare the motion carried and invite Senator Nancy Ruth to take the chair.

Senator Nancy Ruth (Chair) in the chair.

The Chair: Thank you all for your confidence.

Does everyone have a copy of this piece of paper called ``Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights, Orders of Reference and Status of Business''? If not, put your hand up and the page will bring you one.

I suggest we go in camera, so let us do that.

(The committee continued in camera.)
