The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day, in camera, at 4:05 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the deputy chair, the Honourable Mobina S.B. Jaffer, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Baker, Brazeau, Fairbairn, Jaffer, Kochhar and Nancy Ruth (8).
In attendance: Allison Goody, Julia Nicol and Julian Walker, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, the committee continued its examination of the role that the Government of Canada may play in supporting the promotion and protection of women's rights in Afghanistan after Canada has ended its combat operations in 2011. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 5.)
It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera meeting.
Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.
At 4:10 p.m., the Honourable Nancy Ruth took the chair.
It was agreed that the report be adopted, as amended, and that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the final text.
At 5:10 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee discussed a draft agenda (future business).
At 5:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the committee continued its examination of issues relating to human rights and, inter alia, to review the machinery of government dealing with Canada's international and national human rights obligations. Mr. Paquette and Mr. Boileau each made a statement and, together with Ms. Olivotto and Mr. Smith, answered questions.
