The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day, at 4:10 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable Nancy Ruth, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Dallaire, Hubley, Jaffer, Kochhar, Nancy Ruth and Zimmer (8).
In attendance: Julian Walker and Julia Nicol, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the committee continued its examination of issues relating to human rights and, inter alia, to review the machinery of government dealing with Canada's international and national human rights obligations. Swimming Canada:
Mark Hahto, Chief Operating Officer.
Athletics Canada:
Ozzie Sawicki, Para-Athletics Head Coach.
Canadian Blind Sports Association:
Jane Blaine, Executive Director (by video conference).
Mr. Hahto, Mr. Sawicki and Ms. Blaine each made a statement and, together, answered questions.
At 5:25 p.m., the committee suspended.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the committee began its examination issues of sexual exploitation of children in Canada.
At 5:32 p.m., the committee, pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), resumed in camera to consider a draft report.
It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera meeting.
It was agreed that:
The draft report, as amended, be adopted; and
That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the final version of the report taking into consideration this meeting's discussions, and with any necessary editorial, grammatical and translation changes required.
At 6:35 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
