The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 4:20 p.m., this day, in room 160- S, Centre Block, the chair, Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, De Bané, P.C., Downe, Finley, Fortin- Duplessis, Johnson, Mahovlich, Mockler, Robichaud, P.C., Rivard, Smith (Cobourg) and Wallin (12).
In attendance: Natalie Mychajlyszyn and Brian Hermon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, the committee continued its examination of the political and economic developments in Brazil and the implications for Canadian policy and interests in the region, and other related matters. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)
WITNESSES:
Embassy of Brazil:
His Excellency Piragibe Dos Santos Tarragô, Ambassador;
Paulo Roberto Amora Alvarenga, Minister-Counsellor of the Embassy.
Ambassador Tarragô made a statement and with Mr. Alvarenga answered questions.
At 5:30 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 5:35 p.m., the committee resumed in camera, and in accordance with rule 92(2)(e), considered a draft agenda.
It was agreed that senators' staff be allowed to stay in the room.
At 5:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
