The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 5:05 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Chaput, Demers, Frum, Martin, Mercer, Mockler, Plett, Robichaud, P.C., Verner, P.C. and Wallace (11).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of research and innovation efforts in the agricultural sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Victor Santacruz, Executive Director.

Ontario Berry Growers Association:

Kevin Schooley, Executive Director.

Genome Canada:

Pierre Meulien, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Philip M. Sherman, Scientific Director;

Paul Bélanger, Assistant Director.

Mr. Santacruz and Mr. Schooley each made opening statements and answered questions.

At 6:11 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:16 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Meulien and Mr. Sherman each made opening statements and, together with Mr. Bélanger, answered questions.

At 7:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
