The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 6:50 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Vernon White, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Campbell, Demers, Lovelace Nicholas, Patterson, Raine, Sibbeston, Watt and White (9).

In attendance: Shauna Troniak and Wren Nasr, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the committee continued its consideration on the evolving legal and political recognition of the collective identity and rights of the Métis in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 14.)

WITNESSES:

New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council:

Kim Nash-McKinley, President and Chief;

Ron Swain, National Vice-Chief (Congress of Aboriginal Peoples).

Red Sky Métis Independent Nation:

Donelda DeLaRonde, Executive Director;

Troy DeLaRonde, Métis Chief;

Susan Blekkenhorst, Consultation coordinator;

John Edmond, B.A., M.A., LL.M., Legal Counsel.

Ms Nash-McKinley made a statement and, together with Mr. Swain, answered questions.

Mr. DeLaRonde made a statement and, together with Mr. Edmond, answered questions.

At 8:05 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
