The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day, at 9:05 a.m., in the Ballroom C Room, Delta Winnipeg, Winnipeg, Manitoba, the chair, the Honourable W. David Angus, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Banks, Brown, Massicotte, Mitchell, Neufeld, and Sibbeston (7).

In attendance: Marc LeBlanc and Sam Banks, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Jean-Pierre Morin, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its examination of the current state and future of Canada's energy sector (including alternative energy). (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

As an individual:

Nazim Cicek, Professor, Department of Biosystems Engineering, University of Manitoba.

Red River College:

Ray Hoemsen, Director, Applied Research and Commercialization;

Ken Webb, Vice-President, Academic Research.

Manitoba Environmental Industries Association:

Daniel Lepp Friesen, Member and Coordinator of 50 by 30 Energy Policy Initiative and Owner of DLF Consulting.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Cicek made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:55 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:10 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Hoemsen and Mr. Webb made a statement and answered questions.

The chair made a statement.

The motion was passed regarding electronic coverage.

Mr. Friesen made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:41 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
