The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera this day at 5:02 p.m., in room 505, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Elizabeth Hubley, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Harb, Hubley, MacDonald, McInnis, Oliver, Poirier, Raine and Unger (8).

In attendance: François Côté and Odette Madore, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 20, 2011, the committee continued its study on the management of the grey seal population off Canada's East Coast. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft report.

After debate, it was agreed:

That the report be adopted, on division, with the title as discussed today;

That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be authorized, on division, to approve the final version of the report with any necessary editorial, grammatical and translation changes required;

That the chair be authorized, on division, to table the report in the Senate, at the earliest opportunity and to request a complete and detailed response from the government and to encourage the government to provide the response to the report as soon as possible given the time sensitivity of certain recommendations.

At 5:32 p.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 8, 2012, the committee continued to examine issues relating to the lobster fishery in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft agenda (future business).

At 5:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
