The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 5:06 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Fabian Manning, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Harb, Hubley, MacDonald, Manning, McInnis, Oliver, Poirier, Raine, Unger and Watt (10).

In attendance: Odette Madore, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; Mona Ishack, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate of the Senate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 8, 2012, the committee continued to examine issues relating to the lobster fishery in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)

WITNESSES:

Government of Nova Scotia:

The Honourable Sterling Belliveau, MLA, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture;

Leo Muise, Executive Director, Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Minister Belliveau made a statement and, together with Mr. Muise, answered questions.

At 6:30 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:37 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).

At 7:15 p.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Sunday, June 26, 2011, the committee continued to examine issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft agenda (future business).

At 7:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
