The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day, at 4:01 p.m. in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Mobina S. B. Jaffer, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Harb, Hubley, Jaffer, Meredith, White and Zimmer (8).
In attendance: Julian Walker and Lyne Casavan, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament, Debbie Larocque, Administrative Assistant, Senate Committees Directorate; Ceri Au, Communications Officer, Senate Communications Directorate.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, the committee continued its examination of cyberbullying in Canada with regard to Canada's international human rights obligations under Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. At 5:35 p.m., the committee resumed.
Ms. Wing made a presentation and, together with Mr. Johnson, answered questions.
At 6:37 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 6:56 p.m., the committee resumed.
Mr. Knowlton and Mr. Roberts each made a statement and, together, answered questions.
At 7:43 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 7:46 p.m., the committee resumed in camera.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, the committee began its examination of an invitation to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to appear with his officials before the committee for the purpose of updating the members of the committee on actions taken concerning the recommendations contained in the committee's report entitled: A Hard Bed to lie in: Matrimonial Real Property on Reserve, tabled in the Senate November 4, 2003.
Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.
It was agreed that senators' staff be allowed to remain in the room for the in camera portion of today's meeting.
The committee began its consideration of a draft report.
It was agreed that the report be adopted.
At 7:48 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee continued in camera to consider a draft agenda.
At 7:57 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
