The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:18 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the Honourable Senator Kelvin K. Ogilvie, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Cordy, Dyck, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Ogilvie, Seidman, Seth and Verner, P.C. (10).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 17, 2011, the committee continued its study on prescription pharmaceuticals in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 12.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Dr. Alain Beaudet, President;

Dr. Robert Peterson, Executive Director, Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network.

Terence Young, P.M., Oakville and founder of Drug Safety Canada.

Psychiatric Medication Awareness Group:

Janet Currie, Representative.

The chair made a statement.

Dr. Beaudet and Dr. Peterson each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 5:11 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:13 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Young and Ms. Currie each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 6:11 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
