The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:15 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Dyck, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Martin, Munson, Ogilvie, Oh, Seidman, Seth and Verner, P.C. (11).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee considered two draft special study budget applications.

The Honourable Senator Eggleton, P.C., moved:

That the following special study budget application (to examine social inclusion and cohesion in Canada), for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

GENERAL EXPENSES $ 12,500
TOTAL $ 12,500

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator Eggleton, P.C., moved:

That the following special study budget application (to examine prescription pharmaceuticals in Canada), for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

GENERAL EXPENSES $ 30,600
TOTAL $ 30,600

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 4:16 p.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, the committee continued its study on prescription pharmaceuticals in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 12.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Pharmacists Association:

Dr. Jeff Poston, President.

Canadian Psychiatric Association:

Dr. Jitender Sareen, Chair, Research Committee.

Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists:

Dr. Kara Laing, President.

The chair made a statement.

Dr. Poston, Dr. Laing and Dr. Sareen each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 6:07 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
