The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:16 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Black, Cordy, Dyck, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Maltais, Martin, Munson, Ogilvie, Seidman and Verner, P.C. (11).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, the committee continued its study on prescription pharmaceuticals in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 12.)

Dr. Marc Berthiaume, Director, Marketed Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau, HPFB;

Dr. Supriya Sharma, Senior Medical Advisor, Health Products and Food Branch.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Dr. Alain Beaudet, President; and

Dr. Robert Peterson, Executive Director, Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network

The chair made a statement.

Dr. Beaudet, Dr. Peterson, Dr. Sharma and Dr. Berthiaume each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 6:13 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
