The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day at 10:34 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Dawson, Demers, Downe, Fortin-Duplessis, Housakos, Johnson, Oh, Robichaud, P.C., Smith, P.C. (Cobourg), and Verner, P.C. (12).

In attendance: Natalie Mychajlyszyn and Brian Hermon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 21, 2013, the committee continued its study on security conditions and economic developments in the Asia-Pacific region, the implications for Canadian policy and interests in the region, and other related matters. (For the complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

National Defence:

Rear-Admiral David Gardam, Director General International Security Policy.

Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada:

Susan Gregson, Assistant Deputy Minister (Asia);

Peter MacArthur, Director General of South, Southeast Asia and Oceania;

Jeff Nankivell, Director General for Development in Asia;

Leslie Norton, Director General, International Humanitarian Assistance Directorate.

The chair made an opening statement.

Rear-Admiral Gardam made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:18 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:27 a.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Gregson made a statement and, together with Messrs. MacArthur, Nankivell and Ms. Norton, answered questions.

At 12:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
