The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day at 11:15 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Beyak, Cordy, Dawson, Downe, Eaton, Enverga, Fortin-Duplessis, Greene, Oh and Smith, P.C. (Cobourg) (12).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wells (1).
In attendance: James Lee, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Karen Schwinghamer, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 21, 2013, the committee continued its study on such issues as may arise from time to time relating to foreign relations and international trade generally. Dario Eduardo Ramirez Ramirez, Councillor of the municipality of Sucre, Miranda State, member of political party Popular Will (by video conference);
Tamara Suju Roa, Venezuelan lawyer, specialist in human rights, international director of Foro Penal (by video conference);
Anna Alessandra Polga Cedeno, Venezuelan resident in Canada and human rights activist.
The chair made a statement.
Mr. Ramirez, Ms. Suju Roa and Ms. Polga Cedeno made statements and answered questions.
At 12:06 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 12:08 p.m., the committee resumed in camera and, pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, the committee continued its study on the potential for increased Canada-United States- Mexico trade and investment, including in growth areas in key resource, manufacturing and service sectors; the federal actions needed to realize any identified opportunities in these key sectors; and opportunities for deepening cooperation at the trilateral level. Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft report.
It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.
It was agreed that the draft report be adopted, and that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be authorized to make necessary editorial revisions and approve the final text before tabling in the Senate.
At 12:25 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
