The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met this day at 9:30 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Joseph A. Day, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Chaput, Day, Eaton, Gerstein, Hervieux- Payette, P.C., Mockler, Rivard, Smith (Saurel), and Wallace (10).

In attendance: Sylvain Fleury and Raphaëlle Deraspe, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 26, 2015, the committee continued its examination of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 28.)

David Enns, Chief Financial Officer;

Mitch Davies, Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Sector;

Lawrence Hanson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Science and Innovation Sector.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada:

Brent Herbert-Copley, Executive Vice President.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada:

Alfred Tsang, Chief Financial Officer and Vice President, Common Administrative Services Directorate;

Janet Walden, Chief Operating Officer.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Enns made a statement and, together with Mr. Davies and Mr. Hanson, answered questions.

At 10:35 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:40 a.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Walden and Mr. Herbert-Copley made statements and, together with Mr. Tsang, answered questions.

At 11:35 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
