The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:27 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Cordy, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Manning, Nancy Ruth, Ogilvie, Raine and Seidman (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Frum (1).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, the committee continued its study on the increasing incidence of obesity in Canada: causes, consequences and the way forward. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 22.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Nutrition Society:

Angelo Tremblay, Advisory Committee Member.

Dietitians of Canada:

Pat Vanderkooy, Manager, Public Affairs.

As an individual:

Vladimir Vuksan, Professor, Department of Nutritional Sciences and Medicine, University of Toronto.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Tremblay, Ms. Vanderkooy and Mr. Vuksan each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 12:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
