The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:47 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Honourable Lillian Eva Dyck presiding.

Senators present: The Honourable Senators Doyle, Dyck, Enverga, Lovelace Nicholas, Mégie, Pate, Patterson, Raine, Sinclair, Tannas, Watt, Bovey, Brazeau and Dupuis (14).

In attendance: Brittany Collier and Sara Fryer, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, September 19, 2017, the committee began its study on the Government Response to the fifth report of the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples entitled We Can Do Better: Housing In Inuit Nunangat.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, P.C., M.P., Minister of Families, Children and Social Development;

The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P., Minister of Indigenous Services.

WITNESSES:

Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada:

Stephen Van Dine, Assistant Deputy Minister, Northern Affairs.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation:

Charlie MacArthur, Senior Vice-President, Regional Operations and Assisted Housing;

Michel Tremblay, Senior Vice-President, Policy, Research and Public Affairs.

The Honourable Senator Dyck asked for leave to preside over today's proceedings for the purpose of receiving evidence.

It was agreed, with leave, that the Honourable Senator Dyck preside over the proceedings.

The Honourable Senator Dyck made a statement.

The Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and the Minister of Indigenous Services each made a statement and together answered questions.

At 8:14 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:19 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. MacArthur, Mr. Tremblay, and Mr. Van Dine answered questions.

At 8:42 p.m., the committee adjourned.
