The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:02 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Lillian Eva Dyck, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Doyle, Dyck, Gold, McCallum, McPhedran, Patterson and Tannas (7).

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, December 15, 2016, the committee continued its study on the new relationship between Canada and First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 16.)

WITNESSES:

Abel Bosum, Grand Chief;

Bill Namagoose, Executive Director;

Brian Craik, Director of Federal Relations;

Paul Wertman, Advisor.

Chiefs of Ontario:

Isadore Day, Ontario Regional Chief.

The chair made a statement.

The committee considered a draft budget.

It was agreed that the following special study budget application (Study on a new relationship between Canada and First Nations, Métis and Inuit People) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration following a final review by the Senate Administration that will be overseen by the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure:

Mr. Bosum made a statement and, together with Mr. Namagoose, Mr. Craik, and Mr. Wertman, answered questions.

At 10:04 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:11 a.m., the committee resumed.

At 11:08 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
