The Special Senate Committee on the Arctic met this day at 6:30 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bovey, Eaton, Gold, McPhedran, Neufeld, Oh and Pate (7).
In attendance: Sara Fryer and Thai Nguyen, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
The clerk informed the committee of the unavoidable absence of the chair and deputy chair and presided over the election of an acting chair.
The Honourable Senator Eaton moved:
That the Honourable Senator Bovey be elected chair of the committee.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
The acting chair took the chair.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, the committee continued its study on the significant and rapid changes to the Arctic, and impacts on original inhabitants. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)
WITNESSES:
Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada:
Stephen Van Dine, Assistant Deputy Minister, Northern Affairs;
Wayne Walsh, Director General, Northern Strategic Policy Branch, Northern Affairs.
Mr. Van Dine made a statement and, together with Mr. Walsh, answered questions.
At 7:32 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
