The Special Committee on the Arctic met this day at 6:30 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Glen Patterson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boniface, Bovey, Boyer, Galvez, Oh and Patterson (6).

In attendance: Sara Fryer and Thai Nguyen, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, the committee pursued it study to consider the significant and rapid changes to the Arctic and the impacts on its original inhabitants. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Indigenous Works:

Kelly Lendsay, President and Chief Executive Officer (by video conference).

Mining Association of Canada:

Brendan Marshall, Vice President, Economic and Northern Affairs.

Kitikmeot Inuit Association:

Charlie Lyall, Vice President of Economic Development;

Paul Emingak, Executive Director.

Nunavut Resources Corporation:

Scott Northey, Chief Operating Officer.

Mr. Lendsay and Mr. Marshall made statements and answered questions.

At 7:50 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:52 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Lyall, Mr. Emingak and Mr. Northey made statements and answered questions.

At 8:32 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
