The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met in camera this day at 11:36 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Jim Munson, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Gagné, Hubley, Martin, Munson, Nancy Ruth, Ngo and Omidvar (9).
In attendance: Jean-Philippe Duguay and Erin Shaw, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 14, 2016, the committee continued its consideration of study on steps being taken to facilitate the integration of newly-arrived Syrian refugees and to address the challenges they are facing, including by the various levels of government, private sponsors and non-governmental organizations. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 5.)
It was agreed that senators' staff be allowed to stay in the room.
It was agreed that the committee allow the transcription and recording of the in camera portion of today's meeting, that one copy be kept in the office of the clerk of the committee for consultation by committee members present or by the committee analysts; and that the transcript be destroyed by the clerk when authorized to do so by the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, but no later than at the end of this parliamentary session.
Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft report.
After debate, it was agreed that the draft report (as amended) be adopted; that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the final version of the report, including the executive summary, taking into consideration this meeting's discussions, with any necessary editorial, grammatical and translation changes required and that the chair seek permission in the Senate, at the earliest opportunity, to deposit a report with the Clerk of the Senate if the Senate is not then sitting.
At 1:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
