The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 9:01 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Robert Black, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Black, Burey, Dalphond, Klyne, Kutcher, Marshall, Oudar, Plett, Richards, Simons and Sorensen (11).

Participating in the meeting: Joanne Markle LaMontagne, Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-275, An Act to amend the Health of Animals Act (biosecurity on farms).

WITNESSES:

Tim Klompmaker, Chair;

Michael Laliberté, Chief Executive Officer.

Turkey Farmers of Canada:

Darren Ference, Chair (by videoconference);

Maegan MacKimmie, Manager, Corporate Communications (by videoconference).

Canadian Pork Council:

René Roy, Chair;

Gabriela Guigou, Director, Animal Health.

Animal Health Canada:

Colleen McElwain, Executive Director.

Animal Justice:

Pierre Sadik, Government and Legislative Affairs Counsel.

Humane Canada:

Toolika Rastogi, Senior Manager, Policy and Research.

Tim Klompmaker, Darren Ference and René Roy each made a statement and, together with Michael Laliberté, answered questions.

At 10 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:05 a.m., the committee resumed.

Colleen McElwain, Pierre Sadik and Toolika Rastogi each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
