The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy met this day at 11:30 a.m., in room W120, 1 Wellington St., the chair, the Honourable Pamela Wallin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Deacon (Nova Scotia), Gignac, Loffreda, Marwah, Massicotte, Ringuette, Smith, Wallin and Yussuff (10).

Participating in the meeting: Edison Roy-César and Adriane Yong, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, December 16, 2021, the committee continued its study of matters relating to banking, trade and commerce generally.

WITNESSES:

Canada West Foundation:

Janet Lane, Director, Human Capital Centre (by videoconference).

Competition Bureau Canada:

Leila Wright, Deputy Commissioner, Digital Enforcement and Intelligence Branch;

Anthony Durocher, Deputy Commissioner, Competition Promotion Branch.

As an individual:

Jack Mintz, President's Fellow, The School of Public Policy, University of Calgary (by videoconference).

Janet Lane and Jack Mintz each made a statement.

At 11:42 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:44 a.m., the committee resumed.

The chair informed Jack Mintz that his statement had to be interrupted due to the lack of simultaneous interpretation. Jack Mintz was dismissed.

Janet Lane answered questions.

At 12:29 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:31 p.m., the committee resumed.

Anthony Durocher made a statement and, together with Leila Wright, answered questions.

At 1:28 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
