Hélène F. Fortin (FCPA, auditor, FCA, ICD.D) holds a Bachelor of Commerce in finance and accounting from Concordia University and a postgraduate diploma in public accountancy from McGill University. She became a chartered accountant (CA) in 1982 while working with Coopers & Lybrand, now PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Ms. Fortin completed the directors’ education program from the Rotman School of Business and obtained her ICD.D designation in 2006 from the Institute of Corporate Directors. She was awarded the Fellow designation by the Quebec Order of Chartered Accountants in 2010 and from CPA Québec in 2012.

Ms. Fortin lectured in accounting and auditing for more than 20 years at many universities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She was actively involved from 1982 to 2019 with the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, with the Interprovincial Board of Evaluators and with the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board during which time the 36 international standards of auditing were adopted in Canada.

From 1985 to 1989, Ms. Fortin participated in the series of acquisitions of companies that punctuated the growth of Quebecor Inc. She has since returned to public accounting as an audit, assurance and advisory partner now managing her own firm LF&B-CPA inc., which assists clients with financing strategies and implementation, reporting, compliance, structuring, acquisitions, accounting, tax, controls and governance. She is actively involved with asset management and financing and funding strategies in her role as trustee and advisor for large pension plans, estates and foundations.

Ms. Fortin has been serving on boards of directors of large public and private corporations since 2003, which exposed her to best governance practices. She currently sits on the board of UBS Bank (Canada), Loto Québec (chair), Institute of Corporate Directors/Quebec, VoiceAge Corporation, and the federal department audit and advisory committee of Justice Canada.

Former board positions include Concordia University, Assuris, CBC Radio-Canada, Hydro-Québec, Infrastructure Québec (chair), Foundation of Stars and Armand-Frappier/INRS Foundation, the federal department audit committee of the Public Service Commission, the Canada Economic Development Agency for the Quebec regions, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada as well as many not-for-profit and charitable organizations. She’s also served on the board of several TSX-listed corporations including Bellus Health (BLU) as chair of the audit committee, Neptune Wellness Solutions (TSX/Nasdaq NEPT) as chair of the audit committee and Groupe BV (GBV) as chair of the board.

A member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and the Institute of Internal Auditors, Ms. Fortin is actively involved in enterprise-wide governance as an author, lecturer and speaker. In 2018, she chaired and hosted the organizing committee for the Forum OBNL 2018, a forum for non-profit organizations held in Montréal. She has been continuously involved in fundraisers for health, arts, children, environment and education organizations.
