The Special Senate Committee on Senate Modernization met this day in camera at 4:02 p.m., in room 256-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Thomas Johnson McInnis, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Cools, Eggleton, P.C., Greene, Johnson, Massicotte, McCoy, McInnis, McIntyre, Oh, Stewart Olsen, Tannas, Tardif and Wells (14).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Duffy, Gagné and Lankin, P.C. (3).
In attendance: Sebastian Spano, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Barbara Reynolds, Procedural Clerk, Committees Directorate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Friday, December 11, 2015, the committee continued its consideration of methods to make the Senate more effective within the current constitutional framework. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)
Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft report.
It was agreed:
That the document entitled Strong majority want independent Senators — appetite for free votes on the rise, submitted by Nanos to Senator McCoy, be filed as an exhibit (Exhibit 1120-04-04-1.42/MDRN-SS-1, 4 "2'').
At 5:47 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
