The Special Senate Committee on Senate Modernization met in camera this day at 12:06 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable Stephen Greene, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Black (Ontario), Deacon, Eggleton, P.C., Frum, Greene, Joyal, P.C., Maltais, Massicotte, McCoy, McInnis, Mockler, Stewart Olsen, Tkachuk, Verner, P.C. and Wells (15).
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Friday, December 11, 2015, the committee continued its consideration of methods to make the Senate more effective within the current constitutional framework. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)
Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft report.
The chair gave a brief account of the letter sent to all members concerning public discussions of draft reports.
After debate, it was agreed that:
The draft report, as amended, be adopted; and
That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the final version of the report, taking into consideration this meeting's discussions, and with any necessary editorial, grammatical and translation changes required.
It was agreed:
That the chair be authorized to table the report at the earliest opportunity in the Senate.
Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft agenda (future business).
At 12:59 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
