The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 9:02 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Ghislain Maltais, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Dagenais, Gagné, Maltais, Mercer, Ogilvie, Oh, Plett, Pratte and Woo (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Cormier (1).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 6, 2016, the committee continued its study on the acquisition of farmland in Canada and its potential impact on the farming sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 17.)

WITNESS:

Government of Nova Scotia:

Michael Devanney, Senior Policy Analyst, Department of Agriculture (by videoconference).

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Devanney made a statement and answered questions.

The Honourable Senator Mercer moved:

That, pursuant to the order adopted by the Senate on December 7, 2016, the membership of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be increased by one non-voting member chosen from the senators who are not members of a recognized party, to be designated after the usual consultation.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 10:07 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
