The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 5:08 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Ghislain Maltais, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Dagenais, Duffy, Gagné, Maltais, Mercer, Ogilvie, Oh, Pratte and Woo (10).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 6, 2016, the committee continued its study on the acquisition of farmland in Canada and its potential impact on the farming sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 17.)

WITNESSES:

Government of Prince Edward Island: (by videoconference)

Alan McIsaac, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries;

John Jamieson, Deputy Minister, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

British Columbia Agriculture Council: (by videoconference)

Lynda Atkinson, Board Member;

Reg Ens, Executive Director;

Martin Rossmann, Member.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. McIsaac made a statement and, together with Mr. Jamieson, answered questions.

At 6:02 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:06 p.m., the committee resumed and Senator Pratte took the chair.

Ms. Atkinson and Mr. Rossmann made statements and, together with Mr. Ens, answered questions.

At 6:58 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
