The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:05 a.m., in room W110, 1 Wellington St., the chair, the Honourable Diane F. Griffin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bernard, Black (Ontario), Dagenais, Deacon (Nova Scotia), Doyle, Griffin, Kutcher, Maltais, Mercer, Miville-Dechêne, Moodie and Oh (12).

In attendance: Corentin Bialais and Offah Obale, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 15, 2018, the committee continued its study on how the value-added food sector can be more competitive in global markets. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 47).

WITNESSES:

Gregg Curwin, Former Chief Executive Officer and Founder.

As an individual:

Simon Somogyi, Arrell Chair in the Business of Food and Associate Professor, University of Guelph.

University of Guelph:

Derek Vella, Manager, Guelph Food Innovation Centre.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Curwin, Mr. Somogyi and Mr. Vella each made statements and answered questions.

At 9:35 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:41 a.m., the committee resumed in camera.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 1, 2018, the committee continued its study on issues relating to agriculture and forestry generally. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 47.) Topic: Support and compensation for supply managed agricultural sectors in relation to the USMCA, CPTPP and CETA Trade Agreements

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed:

That the committee would delay its report on its study on support and compensation for supply managed agricultural sectors, in relation to the USMCA, CPTPP and CETA Trade Agreements, to allow further reflection on recent developments.

At 10:05 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
