The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 9:07 a.m. for election of the deputy chair; and to study on how the value-added food sector can be more competitive in global markets.

The Chair: I’m Senator Diane Griffin, chair of the committee and a senator from Prince Edward Island. At this point, I would like to ask the rest of the senators to introduce themselves.
Senator Mercer: Terry Mercer, Nova Scotia.
Senator C. Deacon: Colin Deacon, Nova Scotia.
Senator R. Black: Robert Black, Ontario.

Senator Gold: Senator Marc Gold from Quebec.
Senator Miville-Dechêne: Senator Julie Miville-Dechêne from Quebec.

Senator Oh: Victor Oh, Ontario.
Senator Doyle: Norman Doyle, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Senator Plett: Don Plett, Manitoba. There is finally a westerner on the committee again.
The Chair: I was going to make that note; we were getting a little sparse. It is very good to have a westerner back on board.
Today, before we start with our witness on the value-added study, I would like to take care of committee business. We have a vacancy in the deputy chairmanship of the committee.
Senator R. Black: If it’s okay, I would be pleased to nominate Senator Plett for deputy chair of this committee.
The Chair: We have a nomination.
Are there any other nominations? Going once, twice, three times.
I think you have it by acclamation, Senator Plett. Welcome aboard. You will be working with Senator Mercer and myself on the steering committee.
Senator Plett: I’m looking forward to it.
The Chair: That’s good. We are too.
