The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 5:02 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable René Cormier, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Gagné, McIntyre, Mégie, Mockler, Moncion, Poirier and Smith (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Forest-Niesing (1).

In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Chantale Lamarche, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate; and Stéphanie Pépin, Legislative Clerk, Committees Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the committee continued its examination and report on Canadians' views about modernizing the Official Languages Act. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 12.)

WITNESSES:

Ronald Bisson, Director.

Association des juristes d'expression française de l'Ontario:

Nadia Effendi, Chair;

Geneviève Pilon, Acting Executive Director.

Supreme Court of Canada:

Roger Bilodeau, Registrar.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Bisson and Ms. Effendi made statements and answered questions.

At 6:03 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:07 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Bilodeau made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:50 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:53 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that the following names would be added to the list of potential witnesses:

Dominic Caron, from the Pink Larkin law firm;

Maryse Nadeau, formerly of the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages for New Brunswick;

Josie Marks, from the Stewart McKelvey law firm;

QCGN's Access to Justice Committee.

At 7:22 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
