Proceedings of the Standing Senate Committee on
Social Affairs, Science and Technology
Issue No. 10 - Evidence - September 29, 2016
OTTAWA, Thursday, September 29, 2016
The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:30 a.m. for the consideration of a draft report on the issue of dementia in our society, and, in camera, to consider a draft budget.
Senator Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie (Chair) in the chair.
[English]
The Chair: I'm calling the meeting to order. At the beginning I'd like to outline the process we will deal with today in our agenda. We have to approve a budget for the publication of a report concerning our dementia study, and that portion of our meeting needs to be public.
So we are starting our meeting in public, and as soon as we complete the first item on the agenda, which is that budget, we will move in camera to deal with the consideration of a draft report. If time permits at the end we'll have some discussion on ongoing or future studies.
We welcome to our committee two new members; we are delighted to have you.
With that, you have had circulated to you a draft budget for the preparation of a report. What I would like to do is show you examples of what the reports look like from our committee in terms of general structure normally. It's been very successful in the past. This is the structure we would put out, with pictures inside and well-formatted with regard to recommendations and other things that are highlighted. That's the nature of what we're talking about.
The budget before you is based on our past experience in terms of the number of copies we need, as well as the clerk having been given a good sense of the current costs in this particular area.
What I would like is, in order for us to reach a decision on this, if somebody would move the adoption of this budget.
Senator Eggleton: So moved.
The Chair: Thank you very much. It's open for discussion.
Senator Eggleton: Can I just add that this is pretty much in accordance with what we've done for a number of years now. The new Communications Directorate here at the Senate has been most helpful in putting all of this together and making it presentable for public consumption.
This report on dementia is vital, as was our previous study on obesity and many others that we've done before that. This is all in accordance with that. As budgets go for committees, this is as low as you could possibly see.
The Chair: Is there any further discussion? Are you ready for the question?
An Hon. Senator: Question.
The Chair: All in favour?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
The Chair: Contrary?
Carried. Thank you very much.
I'm going to ask that we pause briefly to move in camera.
(The committee continued in camera.)
