The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met in camera this day at 4:25 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Eggleton, P.C., Merchant, Nancy Ruth, Ogilvie, Petitclerc, Raine, Seidman and Stewart Olsen (8).

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

The chair called the meeting to order.

It was agreed that senators' staff and witnesses be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera portion of the meeting.

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d) the committee considered of a draft agenda (future business).

At 4:29 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 4:37 p.m., the committee resumed in public.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, the committee began its study on mandate letters of various ministers.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, P.C., M.P., Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada;

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, P.C., M.P., Minister of Science.

WITNESS:

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada:

John Knubley, Deputy Minister.

Minister Bains made a statement.

At 4:50 p.m., the ministers were excused.

Mr. Knubley answered questions.

At 5:20 p.m., the ministers returned.

Minister Duncan made a statement and, together with Minister Bains and Mr. Knubley, answered questions.

At 6:01 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
