The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:37 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Eggleton, P.C., MacDonald, Merchant, Munson, Nancy Ruth, Ogilvie, Petitclerc, Raine, Seidman and Stewart Olsen (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Cormier and Dean (2).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, the committee continued its study on Bill C-210, An Act to amend the National Anthem Act (gender).

WITNESSES:

As an individual:

Chris Champion, Editor, The Dorchester Review;

Stephen Simpson.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Champion and Mr. Simpson each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:22 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:25 a.m., the committee resumed.

It was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-210, An Act to amend the National Anthem Act (gender).

It was agreed that the title stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 1 carry.

It was agreed that the schedule carry.

It was agreed that the title carry.

It was agreed that the bill carry, on division.

It was agreed that the chair report the bill to the Senate.

At 11:29 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
