The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:30 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Dean, Eggleton, P.C., Frum, Mégie, Neufeld, Ogilvie, Petitclerc, Raine, Seidman and Stewart Olsen (11).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, the committee began its examination of Bill C-233, An Act respecting a national strategy for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

WITNESSES:

The Honourable Robert Nicholson, P.C., Member of Parliament for Niagara Falls, of the bill;

Robert Oliphant, Member of Parliament for Don Valley West, co-sponsor of the bill.

Alzheimer Society of Canada:

Pauline Tardif, Chief Executive Officer.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Nicholson, Mr. Oliphant and Ms. Tardif each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:05 a.m. it was agreed to proceed to clause by clause consideration of Bill C-233, An Act respecting a national strategy for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

It was agreed that the title stand postponed.

It was agreed that the preamble stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 1, which contains the short title, stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 2 carry.

It was agreed that clause 3 carry.

The chair asked whether clause 4 shall carry.

After debate, it was agreed that clause 4 carry.

It was agreed that clause 5 carry.

It was agreed that clause 1, which contains the short title, carry.

It was agreed that the preamble carry.

It was agreed that the title carry.

It was agreed that the bill carry.

It was agreed that the chair report the bill to the Senate.

At 11:09 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:15 a.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, December 5, 2016, the committee resumed to begin its examination of Bill S-228, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (prohibiting food and beverage marketing directed at children).

WITNESS:

The Honourable Senator Nancy Greene Raine, sponsor of the bill.

The chair made a statement.

The Honourable Senator Nancy Greene Raine made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:59 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
