The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Tkachuk, Cools, De Bané, Lavoie-Roux, Maheu, Poulin, Rizzuto, and Stratton (8).

In attendance from the Parliamentary Centre: Dr. Edward J.D. Ketchum, Director of Research.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

Ron J. Duhamel, M.P.

From the Treasury Board:

David Miller, Assistant Secretary, Expenditure Management Sector Program Branch;

Tom Hopwood, Director, Office in charge of the improved reporting to Parliament, Program Branch.

Pursuant to its Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 20, 1996, the Committee resumed its examination on Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1997.

Mr. Duhamel made opening remarks.

Messrs Miller and Hopwood made a presentation.

Messrs Duhamel, Miller and Hopwood answered questions.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Lavoie-Roux, that the budget of the Committee be adopted.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

At 12:00 noon, the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
