The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day in Room 505, Victoria Building, at 3:47 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Senator Sharon Carstairs, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Bryden, Carstairs, Doyle, Gigantès, Jessiman, Lewis, Losier-Cool, Milne, Nolin and Pearson (11).
Other Senator present: The Honourable Senator MacDonald (Halifax) (1).
In attendance: Mary Hurley, Research Officer, Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

David Paget, Senior General Counsel, Corporate Policy and Planning Directorate;
Deborah McCorkell-Hoy, Director, Law Reform Division.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 23, 1996, the Committee commenced its consideration of Bill C-9, An Act respecting the Law Commission of Canada.
The Chair made an opening statement.
Mr. David Paget made a statement and, together with Deborah McCorkell-Hoy, answered questions.
The witnesses agreed to review the drafting of Clause 18(1) with respect to members of the Law Commission of Canada Advisory Council holding office "during pleasure" and, if appropriate, to include an amendment in a future Miscellaneous Statute Law Amendment Act.
It was agreed, - THAT the witnesses return before the Committee to address its concern regarding Clause 18(1) of Bill C-9.
It was agreed, - THAT clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-9 be postponed until Thursday, May 9, 1996.
At 5:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
