The Subcommittee on Post-Secondary education met at 9:00 a.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable M. Lorne Bonnell, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bonnell, Cools, DeWare, Lavoie-Roux, Losier-Cool and Perrault (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Statistics Canada:

Doug Lynd, Assistant Director, Centre for EDUCATION Statistics;

John Jackson, Chief, Post-Secondary education Section.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 19, 1996, the subcommittee resumed its consideration of the inquiry on the serious state of Post-Secondary education in Canada. (See Proceedings of the subcommittee dated August 6, 1996, Issue No. 1, for complete text of Order of Reference.)

Messrs Lynd and Jackson made opening statements and answered questions.

Pursuant to requests of the subcommittee, the above-named officials agreed to provide the following information to the clerk:

1. The breakdown of research funds by institution and by disciplines for the past 10 or 20 years;

2. The number of foreign students studying in Canada over the past ten years as well as the number of Canadian students studying abroad;

3. The percentage of students today who work while attending university as compared to ten years ago, and whether or not this affects their grades;

4. The number of students sponsored by business;

5. Any statistics on the kinds of jobs that are available; and

6. Any recommendations on how the Government of Canada and the provincial governments could better do their statistical work.

At 10:42 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
