The Subcommittee on Post-Secondary education met at 9:05 am. this day in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable M. Lorne Bonnell, presiding.
Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bonnell, DeWare, Forest, Lavoie-Roux and Mercier (6).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 19, 1996, the subcommittee resumed its consideration of the inquiry on the serious state of Post-Secondary education in Canada (for full text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Subcommittee dated August 6, 1996, Issue No. 1 ).
The Honourable Robert W. Mitchell made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 10:20 a.m., Saul Schwartz and Ross Finnie made opening statements and answered questions.
At 10:25 a.m., the Honourable Senator Lavoie-Roux, Deputy Chair, assumed the Chair.
At 10:55 a.m., the Honourable Senator Forest moved that Senator Andreychuk serve as Acting Chair.
The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.
At 11:15 a.m., the Honourable Senator Bonnell resumed as Chair.
Jennison Asuncion and Frank Smith made an opening statement and answered questions.
Mr. Smith tabled the following documents with the Clerk:
(a) NEADS Newsletter No. 46 dated February, 1997, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 14 "38";
(b) Publication entitled Study of Financial Assistance Available to Post-Secondary Students with Disabilities: Accommodating Individual Needs for the Future, Final Report, October, 1993, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P114 "39";
(c) Publication entitled Employment Opportunities for Post-Secondary Students and Graduates with Disabilities: A National Study, July, 1996, retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P1 14 "40"; and
(d) Publication entitled Equal Citizenship for Canadians with Disabilities, The will to act, published by the Federal Task Force on Disability Issues, Government of Canada, 1966; which was retained as Exhibit No. 6050-2.35/P114 "41".
At 12:15 p.m., the subcommittee continued its meeting in camera to discuss a draft interim report.
It was agreed, -- That the subcommittee next meet on Tuesday afternoon when the Senate rises but not earlier than 4:00 p.m. to continue consideration of an interim report.
At 1:00 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 19, 1996, the subcommittee resumed its consideration of the inquiry on the serious state of Post-Secondary education in Canada (for full text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Subcommittee dated August 6, 1996, Issue No. 1 ).
The subcommittee reviewed and amended its Interim Report for final approval by the Committee at its meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, 1997.
At 5:25 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
