The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day at 3:30 p.m. in room 505, Victoria Building, the Deputy Chairman, the Honourable David Tkachuk, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Callbeck, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Meighen, Oliver, Stewart and Tkachuk (9).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Mr. Gerry Goldstein, Director Economics Division and Ms Margaret Smith, Research Officer, Law and Government Division.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 22, 1997, the committee resumed its examination into the state of the financial system in Canada and in particular its study of the Task Force on the Future of the Canadian Financial Services Sector. (See Issue No. 1, October 23, 1997, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)
Mr. May made an opening statement and then, along with Mr. Taylor and Mr. Hensel, answered questions.
Ms Hillard made an opening statement and then, along with Ms Lacombe, answered questions.
Mr. Thibaudeau made an opening statement and then, along with Mr. Fleischacker, answered questions.
At 6:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Meighen, seconded by the Honourable Senator Oliver, -- That Mr. Palmer, from the Office of the Superintendent of Financial institutions Canada appear before the committee at the earliest opportunity to answer questions regarding the dismissal of the chief actuary, Mr. Bernard Dusseault.
The motion was carried.
The Honourable Senator Kelleher said that he was withdrawing from the committee during the testimony of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association due to a conflict arising from his law Arms contracts with Chrysler Corporation.
At 1:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
