The subcommittee of the Boreal Forest of the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Salle La Grande, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Nicholas Taylor, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Gill, Mahovlich, Stratton and Taylor (4).

In attendance: Ms Lynne Myers, Research Officer, Library of Parliament; Mr. David Newman, Communications Adviser.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference adopted in the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry on February 19, 1998, the subcommittee commenced its study to inquire into issues related to the harvest of the Boreal Forest and other matters relating to forestry which may referred to it from time to time by the committee. (See Issue No. 1, February 19, 1998, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From l'Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue:

Mr.Yves Bergeron, Professor, Sustainable Forestry, Research and Development in Forestry.

From the Cree Nation of Oujé-Bougoumou:

Mr. Joseph Schecapio-Blacksmith, Local Environment Officer;

Mr. Roger Lacroix, Forestry Technician.

From the Grand Council of the Crees:

Mr. Jack Blacksmith, Special Projects.

From Tembec:

Mr. Robert St-Amour, Vice-President, Forestry Supplies.

The Chairman made an opening statement and introduced senators in attendance.

Mr. Bergeron made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Schecapio-Blacksmith made a presentation and answered questions.

At 11:00 a.m. the committee suspended the session.

At 11:10 a.m. the committee resumed the session.

Mr. St-Amour made a presentation and answered questions.

At 12:03 p.m., the committee adjourned.
