The Subcommittee on Communications of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Marie P. Poulin, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Johnson, Poulin and Spivak (3).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Bacon (1).

In attendance : Matthew Fraser, Special Advisor to the subcommittee.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The subcommittee continued its consideration of Canada's international competitive position in communications as authorized by the Senate on October 29, 1997 and the committee on October 30, 1997. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 30, 1997 for full text of Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association:

The Honourable Doug Frith, P.C., President;

Ms Susan Peacock, Vice-President.

From Maxlink Communications Inc:

Mr. Joel Bell, President.

The witnesses from the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association each made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:40 p.m., the subcommittee suspended.

At 4:45 p.m., the subcommittee resumed.

The witness from Maxlink Communications Inc. made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed -- That the subcommittee move in camera to discuss future business.

It was agreed -- That the Chairman be authorized to hire expert consultants, as required for the study.

At 6:15 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
