The Subcommittee on Canada's Emergency and Disaster Preparedness met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cook, Ferretti Barth, Fraser and Stratton (4).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESS:

From Environment Canada, Atmospheric Environment Service:

Dr. Gordon A. McBean, Assistant Deputy Minister.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance on Wednesday, March 24, 1999, the committee continued its examination of disaster and emergency readiness and preparedness in Canada and matters related to national Defence expenditures, as set out in the Main Estimates 1999-2000.

Dr. McBean made a statement and answered questions.

The committee considered its future business.

At 7:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
