The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 8:35 a.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Gerald Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Butts, Comeau, Cook, Mahovlich, Perrault, P.C., Robertson, Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent ) and Stewart (9).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

APPEARING:

The Honourable David Anderson, P.C., M.P., Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans:

Mr. Jacque Robichaud, Director General, Resource Management Directorate;

Mr. David Rideout, Director General, Economic and Policy Analysis Directorate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on December 1, 1998, the committee continued its examination of the Estimates of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1998 (Parts I and II, tabled in the Senate on March 17, 1998; Report on Priorities and Planning and Departmental Performance Report, tabled in the Senate on November 3, 1998), and other matters relating to the fishing industry. (See proceedings of the committee dated March 4, 1999, Issue No. 17 for complete text of Order of Reference.)

The Chair made an opening statement and introduced the members of the committee attending the meeting.

The Honourable David Anderson made a statement and, with Mr. Robichaud, answered questions.

At 10:15 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
