The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:01 p.m. in Room 256-S Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Phillips presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Bonnell, Cools, Jessiman and Phillips, Forest (5).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 5, 1997 and by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology on November 25, 1997, the subcommittee began its examination of the state of health care in Canada concerning veterans of war and Canadian Service persons; that the study concern itself with the availability, quality and standards of health care available to those veterans and Service persons.

H.C. Chadderton, Chairman;

Brian Forbes, Honorary Secretary General;

Ms Faye Lavell, director, National Secretary.

From the Royal Canadian Legion:

Ralph Annis, Vice-President and Chairman, Veterans Services and Legion Seniors Committees;

Jim Margerum, Chairman, Ontario Command Veterans Services Committee;

Jim Rycroft, Director, Service Bureau;

R. E. (Ted) Keast, Assistant Director, Service Bureau.

From the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada:

Ian D. Inrig, Dominion Secretary-Treasurer.

From the Merchant Navy Coalition for Equality:

Gordon Olmstead, National Chairman;

Thomas H. Brooks, Company of Master Mariners of Canada;

Ms Muriel MacDonald.

Mr. Annis from the Royal Canadian Legion made a statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

Mr. Chadderton of the National Council of Veterans Associations made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:08 p.m. the committee suspended its sitting until 6:45 p.m.

At 6:53 p.m. the committee resumed its sitting.

Mr. Inrig from the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Olmstead and Ms MacDonald from the Merchant Navy Coalition for Equality each made a statement and with Mr. Brooks, answered questions.

The subcommittee adjourned at 8:20 p.m. to the call of the Chair.
