The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs met at 9:00 a.m. (in camera) this day in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Orville H. Phillips, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Cools, Forest, Jessiman and Phillips (5).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Prud'homme and Kelly.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Jewish Congress:

Mr. Eric Vernon, Director;

Professor Irving Abella, Past President; and

Mr. Jack Silverstone, National Executive Director and General Counsel.

From the Jewish War Veterans:

Mr. Lou VanDelman, Executive Director.

From the B'Nai Brith:

Mr. Rubin Friedman, Director of Government Relations;

Mr. Lyle Smordin, President;

Mr. Frank Dimant, Executive Vice-President; and

Mr. Tom Gussman, National Vice-President.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 25, 1997 and by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology on November 25, 1997, the subcommittee continued its examination on the future of the Canadian War Museum. (See Proceedings of the subcommittee dated February 2, 1998, Issue No. 3)

The subcommittee undertook discussion of its future business.

After debate, on the suggestion of the Honourable Senator Prud'homme, it was agreed that mention should be made in the subcommittee report of the fact that Fred Gaffen of the Canadian War Museum was invited to appear before the subcommittee.

The subcommittee resumed its public hearings at 9:30 a.m.

Professor Irving Abella of the Canadian Jewish Congress made a statement and with the assistance of Mr. Jack Silverstone and Mr. Eric Vernon answered questions.

Mr. Lou VanDelman read a statement from remarks prepared by Sam Pasternak, National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of Canada and answered questions.

Mr. Lyle Smordin, Mr. Rubin Friedman, Mr. Frank Dimant and Mr. Tom Gussman of B'Nai Brith made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:20 p.m. the subcommittee adjourned its sitting until 1:30 p.m.

Senator Phillips took the Chair.

Major General Clive Addy of the Federation of Military and United Services Institutes of Canada made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:15 p.m. the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
